Description:
CASED PAIR of SWISS Military OFFICER’S Bern Model 1882 SCHMIDT Revolver

MILITARY REVOLVERS Designed Colonel Rudolph Schmidt

Here we present a C&R Cased Pair of Swiss Model 1882 Schmidt-Galand Ordnance Revolvers, made circa 1900 by Waffenfabrik Bern in Bern, Switzerland. These double action military revolvers were designed by Colonel Rudolph Schmidt, the same gentleman who helped design the iconic Swiss Schmidt-Rubin Straight Pull Rifle, and based on the French Model of 1873. It was primarily made for officers and rear echelon troops that would not need serious frontline firepower.

It served from its adoption in 1882 all the way past World War II. There were several reasons for this. The most obvious was the high-quality of manufacture lent itself to a long service life. Second was that the Swiss adopted the Luger a short time after the 1882, but continued to make the 1882 as the cost was almost half of the Luger. Finally, these revolvers did not see a lot of use as Switzerland has been officially neutral in war since 1815.

As with most things Swiss, these are relatively complex and highly precisely finished. These examples have walnut grips that were used on guns after the serial number 20,000. They use a loading gate for loading and unloading, and a unique feature is that when the loading gate is lowered, the hammer is disconnected, and one can pull the trigger to rotate the cylinder one chamber. Another handy feature is that with the turning of a screw the side panel of the revolver opens to reveal the internals. The firing mechanism is double action with a rebounding hammer. The bottom of the grip frame is cut for a holster stock combination and has a lanyard ring for retention. Of course, the Swiss have serialized nearly every little piece of these revolvers.

The overall condition is fine. Original finishes. Actions excellent. Bores shiny bright with sharp rifling. Great grips. Matching numbers. Homemade case is in good shape. If you love Swiss craftsmanship, then you will love this revolver. It would be a very fitting companion to a Schmidt-Rubin rifle and a Swiss watch.
