Description: Vickers MK1 .303 British Heavy Machine Gun Fully Transferable This item is in stock and ready to ship. USED - EXCELLENT CONDITION. PRE-BAN MACHINE GUN - FULLY TRANSFERABLE This is a fully functioning water-cooled heavy machine gun manufactured by Vickers Limited in 1917 and ultimately shipped to Portugal to be used during World War I. All the items on display are original manufactured items used with this Vickers MK1 machine gun. While in Portugal it was inventoried as item H1947 (as seen inside the take-down box lid) and later shipped to South Africa and eventually to the United States. As you can see from this display, there are many working parts associated with this machine gun which include a tri-pod, overflow water tank, ammo boxes, field tool boxes and lubricating kits. As a result, the Vickers MK1 typically required a six to eight-man team to operate: one to fire, one to feed the ammunition and the rest to help carry the weapon, its ammunition and spare parts. With a rate of fire averaging 500 rounds per minute, the Vickers MK1 was mainly used in combat for indirect fire against enemy positions at ranges up to 4,500 yards. The plunging fire was used with great effect against road junctions, trench system and other distant stationary targets. Utilizing the water-cooled barrel system, the Vickers MK1 could sustain continuous fire for long durations of up to one hour, during which time the Vickers MK1 would deliver over 10,000 rounds at the target before the water tank required a refill along with a barrel swap.
