Description:
BRASS Barrel Antique British T. BOLTON .53 FLINTLOCK INDIAN TRADE Pistol

Early 1800s Pistol Used for TRADE with NATIVES

Here we present an antique T. Bolton British Flintlock Trade Pistol, made circa the early 1800s in Birmingham, England. Both the English and French governments sent thousands of these less expensive trade guns to the colonies in North America and the Caribbean to arm the colonists. These guns were also used to trade with the native peoples for furs and to gain military and trade alliances with them. Generally speaking, trade guns were of a lower quality and finish than the military firearms of that era and many were of questionable safety. Trade guns were usually of a smaller bore and lighter than the regulation arms of the period, however large bores such as this example were not uncommon.

Many gunmakers during this time were contracted with the Hudson Bay Company to supply these good quality flintlock pistols that were traded to the Indigenous Red Indians in exchange for fur pelts that were eagerly desired in the European Fashion Trade. The Hudson Bay company was founded in May of 1670 primarily serving in the fur trading industry in its early years and has continued for 350+ years to present day in London, England. This pistol was designed to make massive holes in things. This pistol would have been a horse carried pistol or perhaps even worn on a belt.

The overall condition is good. The action is excellent. The bore is patinated and smooth. The stock has been repaired from the back of the lock to the left stock flat as well as the left side of the forestock.
