Description:
Antique BELGIAN MADE Model 1853/67 ALBINI-BRAENDLIN 11.5mm Caliber Rifle

Albini-Braendlin Fusil d’infanterie Mle 1853/67

Here we present an antique Belgian Model 1853/67 Albini-Braendlin Infantry Rifle manufactured circa the mid-1850s and upgraded circa 1867 in Belgium. This front-hinged single shot breech loading rifle was designed by Italian army officer Augusto Albini and perfected with the assistance of English gunsmith Francis Braendlin. It has been converted from the Model 1853 rifle that used the percussion firing system. It was tested throughout Europe but adopted only in Belgium in 1867.

On conversion, a new barrel was fitted which was essentially rifled like and copied from the French Chassepot, which was a paper cartridge needle fire predecessor to the Model 1874 Gras. The rifle that succeeded this rifle, the Model 1873 Albini, was merely a newly made version of the Model 53/67 with the Terssen styled extractor.

The left side of the buttstock displays a very nice cartouche with the 1867 date, along with the barrel being dated 1867, which would have been the year this original Model 1853 was upgraded to the Model 1853/67. The “GB in Oval” (Gouvernement Belge) Belgian government property mark is stamped on the chamber. Several other Belgian proofs and markings are stamped on various other parts of the rifle.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina. The action is excellent. The bore is in very nice condition for age. The stock shows some use and there is a cracked section of the forestock between the rear and middle barrel band; otherwise solid. A rare rifle to see, especially in the US!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 34-5/8 inches.

Caliber: 11mm Belgian Albini (11x50R)

Overall condition as seen in photos.
