Antique U.S. SPRINGFIELD Model 1884 “TRAPDOOR” .45-70 GOVT Caliber Rifle
Chambered in the Original .45-70 GOVT w/ACCESSORIES
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, made by the Springfield Armory. This rifle was manufactured in 1888, in the waning days of the Indian Wars and two years before the Wounded Knee massacre. After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle. To be specific, it wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge.
Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.
This example sports a “SWP/1888” cartouche, indicating that this rifle was inspected by Steven W. Porter, Master Armorer and Ordnance Inspector at the Springfield Armory. It includes a period leather sling, a Rock Island Arsenal leather ammunition pouch, a “U.S.” socket bayonet, and a scabbard with a “U.S.” leather/brass frog.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is bright and nice rifling. This example sports a solid stock with average wear and a visible cartouche on the left flat. “1884” dated. Legible markings. “VC 13” is marked on the comb. Good sling. Good bayonet. The leather ammo pouch is in good shape.
