Description:
Antique Remington Model 1863 ZOUAVE Rifle CIVIL WAR Precision Muzzleloader

Only 12,501 Made for the Union Army 1863-1865

Here we present an antique Remington US Model 1863 Contract Rifle manufactured circa 1863, in Ilion, New York. These are considered some of the best rifles made during the American Civil War and certainly one of the most aesthetically pleasing with their brass hardware and blued finish. This is a distinct variant but does have similarities to the US Model 1841 “Mississippi” Rifle as far as approximate overall length and barrel length, the use of brass hardware, and the patchbox in the right side of the stock. The Zouave was a far more refined rifle, however. Whereas many Model 1841s would eventually be updated with caliber changes, long range rear sights, and accommodations for bayonets—both socket and saber style—the Zouave came in the standard .58 caliber that the US had adopted in 1855, and came equipped with a bayonet lug for a saber bayonet as well as a multi-leaf rear sight. The saber bayonet was a logical choice as these are almost always longer and sturdier than socket-mounted spike bayonets and helped make up the difference in overall length between these shorter rifles and the more common 40” barreled rifles like the US Model 1855 or 1861/63 on the Union side and the Pattern 1853 Enfield in common use on the Confederate side.

Many of these appeared to remain unissued during the war for reasons that are not apparent. This one has some interesting modifications to make it into a precision target gun: while the original front sight remains and the rear sight base (in other words, these modifications are reversible in theory if one wishes), a sleeve has been fitted over the muzzle to provide a mount for a Globe type front sight, while the rear sight base was used to mount a handmade rear aperture sight that is elevation adjustable. In addition, this rifle is now equipped with a double set trigger. The sling used here is dated 1903 and is marked for Rock Island Arsenal.

The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish. The action is excellent with superb double set trigger. The bore is likewise excellent: it is hard to believe this rifle has been shot much at all. The stock still shows two Ordnance inspector cartouches on the left stock flat; solid throughout. This is a great gun from the American Civil War with some additions that the precision muzzleloader will appreciate.
