Description:
BRACE DUBLIN CASTLE LIGHT DRAGOON FLINTLOCK Pistols .65 Georgian UK Antique

REVOLUTIONARY WAR Era Martial Flintlock Pistols

Here we present a pair of antique British Dublin Castle Light Dragoon Flintlock Pistols, made circa 1770 in Ireland. From 1204 until 1922 Dublin Castle was the seat of English, and later British rule in Ireland. During that time, it served principally as a residence for the British monarch’s Irish representative, the Viceroy of Ireland, and as a ceremonial and administrative center. The Castle was originally developed as a medieval fortress under the orders of King John of England. It had four corner towers linked by high curtain walls and was built around a large central enclosure.

These nice martial flintlock pistols fall right between the Model of 1756 with the "rounded" brass elongated side plate, and the Model 1777 with the "flat" elongated side plate together with a belt hook. Clearly a transitional model very likely shipped to Boston with the Irish Garrison that occupied the city during the early years of the American Revolutionary War.

These examples both have an 8 inch, .65 caliber barrel and are marked with a CROWN over the G.R. Royal Cypher and with DUBLIN CASTLE across the tail. Dublin Castle flintlocks are extremely rare with Light Dragoon Pistols being probably the very hardest to find according to the book BRITISH CAVALRY CARBINES & PISTOLS OF THE NAPOLEONIC ERA by Barry Chisnall and Geoffrey Davies published in 2013, pages 144 and 145.

The overall condition is good. Both have strong actions and smooth, patinated bores. The stock on the first has a repaired grip area and a stable split at the front of the fore end, while the other shows similar use but without the cracks and repairs. A fantastic set of scarce Dublin Castle Dragoon Pistols!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrels are both 8 inches.

Calibers: .65 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
