German Moravian Gunmaker in PA & OH
Here we present an antique Flintlock Long Rifle by Henry Albrecht, made circa the late-18th Century in Pennsylvania. Henry Albrecht (also Albright) was a prominent gunmaker in the late-18th and early-19th centuries. His father, Andreas Albrecht, was also a gunmaker. They were German Moravians who lived in Pennsylvania. The families of Andreas Albrecht and William Henry III (another gunmaking family) intermarried. Henry Albrecht was trained as both a gunmaker and a joiner (a skilled carpenter), and lived and worked variously in Lititz, Nazareth, Chambersburg, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, and Gnadenhutton, Ohio for a time.
This piece has a full-length striped maple stock with a better than 45-inch octagonal barrel. It has a single trigger and a crescent butt plate. The lock is a Ketland and the barrel is signed by the maker “H. Albrecht”.
The overall condition is very good. Nice patinas throughout. This musket has been professionally reconverted to flintlock and has an excellent action. The bore is smooth and untouched for quite some time. The stock has the diagonal crack through the butt stock that is not mobile. The ramrod is absent.
