Description:
RARE Antique 1893 Dated FRENCH CONTRACT Factory Mosin-Nagant M1891 Rifle

Pre-1898 Dated “1893” w/FINNISH “SA” Marking

Here we present an antique French Contract Mosin-Nagant 1891 Rifle, made in 1893 at the Weapons Factory Chatellerault with a production run between 1892 and 1895. These antique French contract Mosin-Nagant rifles are quite rare, as the French only made about 503,000 rifles. A real pre-1898 antique French Model 1891 Full Length Rifle. This particular one was later refit in Finland to the Finnish M91 Mosin-Nagant standard. The left side of the barrel is marked with “SA” inside a rectangle, for Suomi Armeija (Finnish Army). When Finland achieved independence from Russia, over 190,000 Model 1891 infantry rifles were already stockpiled in the ex-Russian military depots within Finland. As a result, the rifle was adopted as the standard Finnish Army weapon, and surplus Mosin–Nagants were purchased from other European nations which had captured them during World War I. These rifles were then overhauled to meet Finnish Army standards and designated M/91.

The French Model 1891 known in the West as the Mosin–Nagant and in Russia as Mosin's rifle is a five-shot, bolt action, internal magazine fed military rifle developed from 1882 to 1891 and used by the armed forces of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and various other nations. The main differences you’ll find with the French Mosin are as follows: The Russian language does not have the letter “N”, so French models contain a serial number prefix “N”, which stands for number. The factory is clearly marked on the receiver “Ordnance Factory Chatellerault”, as translated. All French contract rifles are antique as they were produced between 1892 and 1895. Finally, sling swivels; Russian rifles were mostly made without the.

The overall condition is good. Original finish. Robust action. The bore is semi-bright and remains in good shape. The stock is solid with an expected amount of wear. Markings are legible. Numbers on the bolt and receiver match. This specimen is dated “1893” and marked with numerous inspection marks. It is chambered in the 7.62x54R cartridge, with a magazine capacity of 5.
