18th Century Cannon Barrel SELF DEFENSE Pistol
Here we present an antique W. Brazier Marked Cannon Barrel Flintlock Pistol, made circa the early18th Century in London, England. William Brazier was apprenticed to Edmund Weston in 1702. He was Contractor to Ordnance beginning in 1714. He was elected Master of the Gunmakers’ Company in 1730 and again in 1747. As a Contractor to Ordnance, he is recorded to have had 28,844 guns proved at the London Proof House between 1721 and 1731. This information about this gunmaker was obtained from “Gunmakers of London 1350-1850” by Howard L. Blackmore.
This pistol would have been intended for use as a self-defense firearm. It is relatively small, being able to fit into a coat pocket or tucked in one’s belt. It has a cannon barrel and is a short 3-1/2 inches in length. The stock is finely checkered. This old flintlock is in pretty good condition and has weathered the test of time, considering it is pushing 300 years in age.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is good for its age. The wood contains average wear and a few thin, stable cracks. “W. BRAZIER” is marked on the lock. London proofs.
