Only 10,500 of this model were produced. The Third Model was first offered in 1851 and continued production through 1861, for a total of 10,500. The revolver is in .44 caliber and has a part round and part octagonal barrel. Colt’s Dragoons experienced some of the harshest conditions the mid-19th century had to offer, and it is amazing that any survived, in any condition. This pistol was designed for use by horse-mounted rifleman, and it is so much pistol that you will want a horse to carry it for you because of its significant weight. This one would have seen use during the American Civil War. This is a great opportunity to add one of Samuel Colt’s most recognized inventions to your collection, a Civil War era Colt Dragoon! This one has several names marked throughout. The bottom of the grip frame is inscribed with what appears to be the oldest: “G.L. NEAFUS”. George Louis Neafus was born in Meade County, Kentucky circa 1840. His father, George W. Neafus, was the captain of a steamer called the Tishomingo, which operated on the Ohio River stopping at Owensboro, Evansville, and Henderson and all points between. George L. would have been 21 years of age when the Civil War broke out. He enlisted as a Private and mustered into the Confederate Kentucky 1st Cavalry K Company on 1 November 1861. Kentucky was very much a divided state during the war, with loyalties torn between the Union and the Confederacy. According to a newspaper article in The Courier-Journal from 13 December 1862, he and others were homeward bound from Vicksburg, Mississippi, along with many of the Shacklett clan from the KY 1st, some of whom appear to have engaged in guerilla warfare in the area of Meade County. George would become a successful farmer after the war. His wife passed before him and at least one of his sons. At some point he moved to southwest Oklahoma where he continued farming. George Neafus passed away in December of 1925 at the age of 85 and it was lamented in the local paper that he and several other Civil War veterans were gone, both gray and blue. Of the other names, we could locate them to Nobles County, Minnesota, where Wilmont is, but as to how the revolver came to be in their possession remains a mystery. They seemed to have used it as a yearbook of sorts by adding their three names to it: Raymond William Ager, Adam W. Ager, and Tom Carey. Perhaps there is more to be discovered! The overall condition is very good. Gray patina throughout. The numbers match with the exception of the barrel wedge, which is not numbered. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition: patinated with good rifling. The grip is solid. A very neat piece of history! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 8 inches. Caliber: .44 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
