Description:
.58 Caliber. 40" round barrel. Breech is stamped  with “1862” and “VP / Eaglehead” proofs. Original two-leaf rear sight and ramrod. Lockplate stamped w/ spread winged Eagle and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD”  and “1862” date behind the hammer. Proper ESA cartouche. Accompanied by a 1861 Pattern Bayonet. CONDITION: Very Good. Metal finishes have taken on an aged grey/brown patina with scattered light to moderate pitting. Lockplate is smooth, stained with old oil/grease. Marks are very good and legible. Wood is sound and handworn finish intact with numerous service and handling marks. Cartouche visible but rubbed smooth. Mechanics are crisp. Period nipple is unbattered. Bore is very bright w/sharp rifling. Bayonet has been cleaned, legible “U.S.” on ricasso. Wonderful multi-generational estate piece from the Civil War.
