ENGRAVED Spanish POR ANDRES VELAZQUEZ Antique “MIQUELET” 16 Gauge SHOTGUN
Circa 1790 Historic MIQUELET FOWLER/Coach Gun
Here we present an antique Miquelet Musket, made circa the late-1700s. The miquelet was an early and sturdy form of flintlock popular throughout Europe and the Ottoman Empire from the seventeenth into the early twentieth century. A “Miquelet” is a type of flintlock developed in Spain. It is a distinctive form of snaplock, originally as a flint-against-steel ignition form, once prevalent in Spain, Portugal, Ital, the Balkans, North Africa and the Ottoman Empire from the late 16th to the mid-19th centuries.
This one was converted to percussion from flintlock. The frizzen assembly has been removed and a new hammer was formed from the old cock. This musket has been shortened and made into a shotgun. This was likely a weapon that saw hard use in the colonies and was converted and continued to be used for a long time.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is smooth and dirty. The stock has some small cracking around the wrist. The side plate appears to have once had a belt hook. Front sights are missing. The top of the barrel is inscribed “POR ANDRES VELAZQUEZ”.
