Description:
Custom .22-3000 LOVELL WILDCAT Antique WINCHESTER 1885 High Wall Rifle WINDER

C.C. JOHNSON of THACKERY OHIO

Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Rifle chambered in .22 Rimfire Short, made in 1881 in New Haven, Connecticut, and customized circa the pre-World War II era by C.C. Johnson of Thackery, Ohio. It is stamped “.22-3000 / C.C. JOHNSON / THACKERY O:” on the barrel, along with “.22 SHORT”, which was the original chambering for this rifle. The .22-3000 was developed in about 1934 by Hervey Lovell, formed from a .25-20 Single Shot case necked down to .22. It was a very popular wildcat cartridge in its day, apparently giving similar performance to the .22 Hornet. Charles C. Johnson was a well-known gunsmith in Ohio from 1933 to 1972. This work would have been done sometime between 1933 and 1947 based on the Thackery barrel legend.

The Winchester Model 1885 has a falling-block action, and two models were produced, the Low Wall and the High Wall. Ironically, this was Winchester’s first single shot rifle, the company having been founded on its winning lever action repeater design. John Moses Browning, the famed gun designer who forever changed the firearms landscape, began his career with this rifle in the 19th Century before dominating the world scene in the 20th Century.

The overall condition is very good. Some silvered case colors visible on the receiver and original blue finish on the barrel. Excellent action. The bore is bright with nice rifling. Fine stock with less than average wear; the forestock slides forward and backward about 1/8” due to a block being absent from the bottom of the barrel and interior of the forestock. The receiver tang once had a peep sight attached; now there are two mounting blocks and the original front sight. This example was rechambered to .22-3000.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 27-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .22-3000
