Description:
RARE Antique COLT NEW LINE .41 Caliber Center ETCHED PANEL POCKET Revolver

LONDON RETAILER Marked & Advertised as the “BIG COLT”

Here we present an antique Etched Panel Colt “New Line” .41 Caliber Centerfire Revolver, made in 1877 in Hartford, Connecticut, and marked for London retailer E.M. Reilly & Co. of 502 New Oxford Street.

This handy little 5-shot Colt, referred to as the “Big Colt” when it came out, carried quite the punch for a pocket self-defense revolver. The large caliber of this variation makes it the most desirable of the “New Lines” with approximately 10,702 manufactured from 1874-1879 due to the short production run. This revolver was designed to be a small but potent self-defense revolver for stowing in one’s pocket in the 19th Century. Spur Trigger “Suicide Special” manufacture was fierce during this time, and Colt struggled to compete against the countless small shops making very similar, less expensive revolvers, though not necessarily of the same quality. The Colt remained a steady, reliable force in firearms for much longer than the rest.

The New Line series of revolvers, including all calibers, was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1873 and continued through 1884. Two years after the Colt House Revolver, a year after the Colt Open Top, and almost simultaneously alongside the Colt Peacemaker, the Colt New Line was one of the first metallic cartridge, rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt. With such a limited number of examples and the larger caliber, this is a very desirable firearm for a Colt collector.

This example is London proofed and has “E.M. REILLY & Co./502. NEW OXFORD St. LONDON” marked on the top strap, along with “COLT NEW 41” etched into the left side of the barrel.

The overall condition is fine. Original nickel finish. Semi-bright bore. Both grips are good with less than average wear from scuffs and handling. Sharp and legible markings.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 2-1/4 inches.
