Here we present an antique Williams Half Stock Percussion Side by Side Combination Rifle/Shotgun, made circa the mid-19th Century in London, England. This side by side percussion gun is a design that gun makers seemed to favor during this period marked by westward expansion, hunting, trapping, and frontier living. This rifle next to a smoothbore would have given the user two shots instead of one in a day when most people had to make one shot count. This would have come in handy when hunting various types of game as well as defending oneself against dangerous game or two-legged predators. The smooth bore on the left and the rifled bore on the right would have offered versatility in that either shot, a single ball or conical, or a combination of “buck ‘n’ ball” could be used depending on the circumstances.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. Original brown finish. The bores are in good shape with a light shimmer. The stock is solid when handled, and the wrist repair is stable and almost goes unnoticed. Some splitting is present towards the tip of the forend. Legible markings. Lightly engraved lock and hammer. The ramrod is missing. The front blade sight is bent.
