VIETNAM WAR Era Carbine
Here we present a C&R Chinese Type 56 SKS Semi-Automatic Infantry Carbine, manufactured in 1958 in China and is equipped with a collapsible Knife Bayonet. China’s 7.62x54R Type 53 Carbine had served faithfully for almost 3/4 of a century in a variety of hot spots around the world before the Type 56 was introduced. The Type 56 is the Chinese copy of the Soviet SKS and was licensed by the Soviet Union to the Chinese in the 1950s as it was felt that a semi-automatic rifle fit their style of warfare. The rifle entered service in 1956, thus its designation.
This carbine acted as the workhorse of the People’s Liberation Army for some 30 years until 1985 when it was completely replaced by the Type 81 and type 56 assault rifles as it was regarded that the effectiveness of the former Type 56 had decreased. This weapon was mass produced at several different Chinese arsenals, indicated by a shaped stamp with a number inside. Most of them were produced at Arsenal /26\, also known as the Jianshe Arsenal.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is bright. This example has maintained a solid stock, but there is a layer of cosmoline that covers the wood. Cosmoline is also present on the metal parts. Legible markings. “MONROE, NC/CHINA” import marked.
