Here we present a Type 30 Arisaka Bolt Action Rifle, made circa 1900 at the Koishikawa Arsenal in Tokyo, Japan, with a production run between 1897 and 1905. The Koishikawa Arsenal, formally the Imperial Japanese Army Tokyo Arsenal, was an arsenal in the Koishikawa area of Tokyo, on the grounds of today's Tokyo Dome City and the Koishikawa K?rakuen Garden. The Type 30 was a project of Colonel Arisaka Nariakira, and his rifle was adopted in 1897, which is the 30th year of the Meijis, which is how it came to be known as the Type 30. This rifle was a building block in Japan’s domestic arms manufacture, which was relatively new, and the Type 30 was only manufactured from 1897 to 1905, when improvements culminated into the Type 38. The Type 30 would fight in the Russo-Japanese War, World War I & World War II, though it would be eclipsed by the Type 38 and then the Type 99 as time went on.
This specimen is representative of about 10,000 Type 30 rifles which were once fully functional rifles, and most were converted for training purposes around the time of WWI. The primary modification to the gun is the bore being made smooth for use with blank cartridges. This example remains rifled and unconverted. The serial number and arsenal mark remains on the left side.
The overall condition is excellent. Robust action. The bore is bright and nicely rifled, making this quite the unusual example. Solid stock throughout. Markings are sharp. The mum is intact. Numbers are mixed. Here is a rare chance to own a base series Type 30 in great display shape!
