Description:
1847 Antique D. NIPPES U.S. Contract M1840 .69 Musket .69 Caliber CIVIL WAR

MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR; 1 of 5,100 NIPPES Model 1840s

Here we present an antique D. Nippes U.S. Contract Model 1840 Bolster Conversion Musket, manufactured in Mill Creek, Lower Marion, Pennsylvania in the middle of the Mexican-American War in 1847. This example would have originally been a flintlock and was likely converted to the more reliable percussion firing system prior to the start of the Civil War. The lock is marked “D. NIPPES/US” under the pan and marked “MILL/CREEK/PA./1847” behind the cock on the rear of the lock. There is an inspector’s cartouche stamped on the left side of the walnut stock with “U.S” stamped on the lock plate. This U.S. contract was the last flintlock rifles purchased by the U.S. government.

This example was produced in the middle of the Mexican-American War which ran from 1846 through 1848, and undoubtably would have also seen action in the hands of a U.S. soldier during the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865.

Daniel Nippes took over his father’s gun manufacturing mill in December of 1812 when his father died. The younger Nippes brought prosperity to the mill through work with the U.S. government. Beginning in 1837 and continuing through 1840, the mill at Mill Creek produced about 1,600 Model 1816 U.S. flintlock muskets, all being marked “US/D.NIPPES/PHILA”. The success he had with these first 1,600 muskets led to a second contract of 5,100 Model 1840 muskets between the years of 1842 and 1848, with the markings “D.NIPPES/US” and “MILL/CREEK/PA”.

The overall condition is fair. The barrel has been stretched and there are several segments that show they have been welded. There is a graft to the forestock under the middle barrel band. The best we can tell this musket was cut down probably in the post-Civil War period and was brought back to full length aesthetically. Dark brown finish on the barrel and patina on the lock. The action is strong. The bore shows the segments and will not be shootable. The walnut stock shows two good cartouches. The stock has a small chip at the top of the rear lock screw on the left stock flat and is otherwise solid.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 42 inches.

Caliber: .69 Percussion
