Description:
FERLIB 20 BORE BOXLOCK EJECTOR BEST GUN, 98% COND. 26 ¾” Bbls. 99% engraving coverage, Briley chokes, high-grade wood,
5 lbs. 7 oz.

Ferlib (Libero-Ferraglio-Ferlib-Italy) 20 gauge, boxlock ejector SxS, but made like a Best Gun sidelock in 1983, with arabesque scroll engraving by Italian Master Engraver Diego Bonzi.

With hand-filed matted concave rib, the 26 3/4” ejector dovetail chopper lump barrels have 2¾” chambers, choked with five Briley concealed chokes (F, IM, M, IC, C). Bores are shiny and measure .630, which is correct.

Metal: This Ferlib is an Anson & Deeley boxlock with traditional features of the highest quality sidelock -- Purdey double underlug locking, automatic ejectors, two triggers with the front articulated, manual safety (to give shooter control) and scalloped fancy back receiver. The gun is perfect mechanically. Ferlib’s trademark “flying bird” is stamped on both the barrels flat and the water table. The stamp “AL” indicates the gun was proofed in 1983.

Stock: Wood is European Walnut with pleasing contrast with its strong figure of black streaks in rich dark brown showing as a fancy grade on both profiles. Stocked in classic English styling with straight-hand grip with drop points (tear drops), it is fitted with a inlaid vacant monogram oval. The extremely fine checkering is 32 lpi and magnificently executed by hand coming to a point over the wrist and flawlessly surrounding the inlaid trigger guard tang that ends with an ornamental spear head. The checkering is wrap-around full coverage on the forearm.  Metal inlays at the upper tang, the trigger guard tang, the frontal Anson forearm release escutcheon and the forearm catch are all perfectly mated to the wood. Note the wood to metal designs of the intricate checkering where wood meets metal in every location. Also note the receiver is inlaid with curved shapes rather than 90 degrees to the stock as typical boxlock guns.  Finish is the French oil finish that takes hours and hours of polishing and drying.

Measurements:
14 5/16” x 1 ½” x 2 ¼” over a 7/8” leather covered recoil pad. Neutral stock for the right or left hand. Weight is 5 lbs. 7 oz.

The barrels are Ferlib’s beautiful polished deep rust blue, and the action is engraved with the finest arabesque scrolls by the master engraver with 99% coverage appropriately set off with Ferlib’s coin-finish. The left barrel is inscribed: Libero-Ferraglio-Ferlib-Italy. The right barrel is inscribed with the importer: Pachmayer Los Angeles CA. The three textures: the rich figured walnut color, the strong coin finish with the full coverage engraving and the deep blue barrels contrast nicely and were tastefully planned.

Inscriptions: On the left barrel is the maker’s name, Libero-Ferraglio Ferlib – Italy.  On the right barrel is the required importer inscription, Pachmayr – Los Angeles CA.

Condition: Original barrel blue is 98%. The coin finished frame is 99%. The original stock and forend finish is 98%. The checkering is 100%.
The bores are “as new” inside and out and the barrels remain tight on face and ring with a pronounced chime.  Lockup feels like shutting a vault door.
This 20 bore is the proper size action body for a 20 bore game gun and has all the strengths that show it was made by a quality gunmaker.

Price: Priced here to move at $8,750, this excellent plus gun comes with maker’s trunk case and accessories as shown.

Buyer must furnish FFL for shipping, payment by money order or cashier’s check. Buyer pays $50 toward shipping. About the Maker: Ferlib was located in the pantheon of the world’s best gun makers in Italy, in the province of Brescia, in Gardone Val Trompia. Founded in 1947 by Libero Ferraglio, the maker first produced a few handmade “best guns” in the form of sidelocks. He apprenticed Ivano Tanfoglio and in the 1960s they changed their focus to become the first Italian maker to build best guns with Anson & Deeley actions (boxlocks).

The maker recognized that most best guns are sidelocks; so their specialty was to build boxlocks with the same attention to detail. Their boxlocks became the classic Italian game guns having all the custom work with the cost savings of the time involved of a boxlock versus a sidelock.

During the “best guns” boxlock era, according to the Blue Book of Gun Values, Ferlib produced 100 to 150 handmade guns annually and all of their guns were best guns. Eventually Ivano Tanfoglio became a master gunmaker and took over the company when Ferraglio retired. Tanfoglio was well known for his innovative thinking and was an early master for programming cc work. He was working on an idea for a round action over and under and to properly fund it, he went into partnership with Bautista Rizzini in 2005. They closed Ferlib; and soon after, the new partnership was swallowed up by the larger company of B. Rizzini.  Tanfoglio continued to work at Rizzini, but it is the Rizzini Round Action that is most generally accredited to him.
