Description:
Allen & Thurber .30 cal Bar Hammer Muff pistol
One of Allens notable inventions was this Rare Bar Hammer Muff pistol (derringer)  which gained popularity during the mid-1800s. The Bar Hammer Muff pistol was a compact, concealable firearm primarily intended for personal defense. These pistols were often chambered in .30 caliber.   They featured a distinctive half-round, half-octagon barrel design with a screw-off type barrel that allowed for breech loading.  They were often sold in pairs to allow for a back-up.
This specific Rare early model Allen Thurber .30 caliber smooth bore Bar Hammer Muff pistol bears markings that provide insight into its origin and design:
  • Side of hammer marked:
  • "ALLENS PATENT
  • Serial number (SN) 548

His innovative designs, such as the Bar Hammer Muff pistol, were emblematic of the era's advancements in firearm technology and served as precursors to future developments in small arms design.

Condition:
2’ half round half octagon barrel with a nice smooth bore with just some very minor pitting.  The metal surface has been cleaned to pewter with stains from oxidation and a few handling marks. The frame is a mix of pewter and gray showing spots of moderate oxidation.  Barrel and hammer markings are still somewhat clear and legible.  The smooth walnut factory grips fit the frame well with handling marks ,  areas of worn finish,  and are numbered to the gun. The pistol appears to function very well mechanically with a strong hammer spring.
