Description:
World War II JINSEN ARSENAL Type 38 JAPANESE C&R KOREAN Made Military Rifle

SCARCE; 1 of 13,400 Type 38s Made in Inchon, Korea

Here we present a C&R Japanese Type 38 Arisaka Military Rifle manufactured circa 1942 at the Jinsen Arsenal in Inchon, Korea. Japan ruled Korea between 1905-1945. Production at this arsenal began in 1923 and continued until the end of the war in 1945. The Type 38 carbine and rifle were bolt-action service rifles used by the Empire of Japan predominantly during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Second World War. The design was adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1905 (the 38th year of the Meiji period, hence "Type 38"). Because the 6.5×50mmSR Arisaka cartridge it fired was considered underpowered, a replacement was devised, which was the Type 99 rifle, but both rifles saw usage until the end of the war. This design was the project of Major Nambu, famed and prolific firearms designer in Japan. The Type 38 has been called the best service rifle of WWII. The design was perfected with the advent of the Type 99, nevertheless, the Type 38 saw plenty of action during World War I and World War II.

The Type 38 rifle was produced at five different Japanese arsenals with over 3 million manufactured over the production run between 1906 through 1944. The Tokyo Arsenal produced 2,029,000 between 1906 and 1932. The Kokura Arsenal produced 494,700 between 1933 and 1941. The Nagoya Arsenal produced 312,500 between 1932 and 1942. The Hoten/Mukden Arsenal produced 148,800 between 1937 and 1944. The Jinsen Arsenal produced 13,400 during the year of 1942.

As Japanese surrender became all the more imminent, many Army rifles bearing the Imperial Chrysanthemum marking of the Emperor had this emblem grounded down in 1945 to spare the Emperor the embarrassment of surrender. Many surviving rifles are often found with this particular condition, especially late-war/late-model production versions. This example has the mum intact.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape with nice metford style rifling. Solid stock contains an average amount of wear. Mixed numbers. The mum is present. Markings are legible.
