Likely Used well into the AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
Here we present an antique Robert Johnson Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol made in 1841 in Middletown, Connecticut. This .54 caliber, smoothbore, flintlock pistol is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. The Model 1836 was widely considered to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol. The pistol has an 8 1/2 inch round barrel with a brass front sight blade, swivel ramrod with button head and iron mountings. The barrel, ramrod, butt cap, barrel band and trigger guard are "bright" finish. The lock plate, hammer, and tang were once casehardened. The lock is marked "US / R. JOHNSON / MIDDN.CONN. / 1841" below the brass pan. Inspection and proof marks US / JH /P are visible atop the barrel. The Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol was the standard issue handgun of the Mexican War.
The overall condition is fair to good. Reconverted to flintlock. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and dim. The stock shows use with minor stable splits here and there.
