In the 1950s, Remington asked chemical engineers at DuPont to come up with a plastic to replace the much heavier wooden stocks of the time. After some research, DuPont came back to Remington with a compound they called Zytel 101, with Zytel being DuPont's brand name for nylon resins. This compound was used to produce the stock and receiver of this model. The Nylon 66 was hugely successful and arguably sparked the beginning of the transition to synthetic materials becoming popular in the firearms world.
