Description:
NSN, .65 Caliber, 9" octagon barrels with fine, lightly freckled bores. This is a splendid pair of traveling/officer’s pistols that have an overall mottled gray-black patina along the barrels, and a lighter, pewter gray patina on the engraved back-action locks and hammers. The captive ramrods also have the same pewter gray patina. The English walnut stocks are wedge-fastened with checkered, bag-shaped grips, and exhibit only minor handling marks and small surface blemishes in the original varnish finish. Additionally, one of the stocks has a knot in the wood on the underside of the forend, just ahead of the trigger guard. Both actions are firm and function flawlessly, however one of the hammers looks to have had a repair performed on the nose during the period of use. The pistols are housed in an original oak traveling case with green baize lining, and are accompanied by the following: japanned cap tin; mainspring vise; nipple wrench; single cavity mold; powder flask; cleaning rod; and a small number of cast lead balls. The case is lockable, and the key is included. Thomas Tipping (of Tipping & Lawden fame) was a Birmingham maker who also had a succession of shops in London. This is a splendid set of pistols that were not used very much, and rate fine-near excellent overall. Antique
