Description:
Springfield Model 1873 'Trapdoor' saddle ring carbine rifle with 22" barrel, chambered in .45-70. Serial number appears to date to very early, likely April or May of 1874 which would apparently put it in the 'Custer Range' of serial numbers, see picture.  I personally don't see a 6-digit serial number, which if it were would put it at 1879, and the rifle itself doesn't appear to exhibit any of the 1879 and later characteristics.  Lock plate appears to have been dated 1873 but then subsequently scratched off as pictured.

Lock has 3 'clicks', no holes in the buttplate for a cleaning rod, 'C' marked rear sight base and ladder (appears to be M1879 type), no lettering or proof marks on the barrel, 1873 marked breech block (early 'high-arch' type with firing pin spring) with eagle head and crossed arrows, breech appears to be the early type without the later 'gas relief cuts' on the side (I believe these are referred to as 'narrow' receivers for this reason and seem to be pre-30k serial range) although there may be some rather short, faint ones that can just barely be felt.  2-piece style trigger guard, 'U' marked front barrel band with stacking swivel.

I am by no means an expert on these so if there are other things that are not pictured or something that I need to look for, please let me know.

Stock has been sanded at some point and appears as though it may be a cut-down rifle stock, and the buttplate is 'proud' to the wood with no remaining cartouches or marks that I can find, see pictures.

3-groove bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling and an even brown patina with what appears to be some thin spots of active rust present here and there.

$45 insured, signature required shipping.

Neat, early piece!

PLEASE EXAMINE PICTURES CAREFULLY, AS THEY ARE CONSIDERED A PART OF THE DESCRIPTION
  • Selling on consignment, I have no knowledge of it beyond a visual inspection
  • If you would like more/different photos, please ask.
  • I do not collect state sales tax as Oregon is a sales tax free state and I do not meet the annual sales minimums for any individual state outside of Oregon.
  • Pictures will show everything that is included, unless otherwise noted. If its not pictured, its not included.
  • Any 'Inspection/Return Policy' (if listed/offered) starts the day the item is delivered to the addressee and ends after the specified number of calendar days have elapsed or once the item is transferred, whichever occurs first.
  • I ship to restricted states if/when/where legal, however it is YOUR responsibility to know your local gun laws.
  • Payment via credit card (+3.5%), money order, cashiers check, personal check (held until cleared). If paying with a check (mail is quite slow to get here, 7-10+ days), I would recommend mailing with tracking such as with first class mail or priority.
  • Will ship via FedEx, signature required and/or insurance depends on item type and/or final value. Stated shipping price is for the lower 48 only, shipping outside of that may incur additional charges that the buyer will be responsible for.
