Description:
This is an incredibly early and attractive Colt SP1, serial number 271! One of the earliest serials to be offered for public sale in recent times, this one is in great condition and has loads of correct, early features. The finish is original and in excellent condition with only minor surface scuffing. It has the early style upper receiver with no provisions for a forward assist. Upper receiver front right side has the proper Colt verified proof mark and the "C" in a box stamping. The lower receiver has the Colt four line markings with the four digit serial number "SP1, Serial Number "SP 00271" indicating production in early 1964. The Type 1 lower receiver has the roll pin hole at the rear and the '+' symbol cast mark on the right side front. It is fitted with the early original parts including the original non-chrome lined Winchester barrel having only a small "M" mark between the front sight post rings on the right side. The barrel is fitted with the early three-prong flash hider along with the checkered edge washer. It has the early commercial smooth sides Type 1 bolt carrier that lacks the cut on the underside with the larger hole in the side for the early solid head machined, steel firing pin and retaining pin, though we believe the retaining pin has partially broken (shown in photo). The bolt is also the early Colt version that is all chrome plated with the acid etched 'M' and 'P' markings. It still retains its original first generation Type 1 old style, large head, two-piece type edgewater recoil buffer. It is also fitted with it original black plastic earlier type one 1 1/8" pistol grip, and the stock is also the early version Type 1 that lacks any provisions for the internal storage compartment in the rear. Only the lined solid rubber butt-plate with the solid screw retainer. The rear type 1 take down pin has the dimpled ends, and it has the type one trigger with open back. The hammer and the front sight post as the "E inside the C" marking. Early thin style cast front sight post without drain hole. Swinging swivels with roll pin fasteners front and back. The bore is shiny with strong rifling and minor frost. All in all, an incredible example of a super early and desirable Colt SP1.
