Description:
ENGRAVED Antique H. SHEETS .42 Percussion Conversion SPORTING Rifle

Early 1800s VIRGINIA w/M.M. MASLIN Lock & PEEP SIGHT

Here we present an antique Engraved H. Sheets Percussion Conversion Sporting Rifle made circa the early 1800s in Staunton, Virginia. Henry Sheets is thought to be the son of John Sheets, who was a master gunsmith in Staunton. There are some conflicting genealogical info on the multiple branches of the Sheets/Sheetz family and the many gunsmiths in the family working in Virginia and West Virginia. This rifle can be tied to the Augusta County branch by the patch box pattern and stock profile which are made on the same design as his father’s documented rifles.

This example would have started out life as a flintlock and converted sometime after the more reliable percussion firing system was introduced. This hammer gun would have been used for putting game on the table and protecting the homestead.

The overall condition is good. The action does not function. Good bore for its age. This example sports a solid stock. Patchbox lid is missing. Rear peep sight. Markings are legible. Some metal parts are lightly engraved. “H. SHEETS” signed barrel top.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 26 inches.

Caliber: .42 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
