Description:
1894 SADDLE RING CARBINE IN THE LEAST PRODUCED CALIBER, .32-40, #344XXX, MADE 1907. Of all the calibers manufactured for the 1894, relatively few were prduced in this early caliber. Those wanting a smaller caliber went with the .25-35 and those wanting a larger bore diameter chose the .38-55. In the mid-size offerings most wanted the .30 WCF (.30-30) or .32 WS-  the .32-40 just seemed like a weaker chambering with no advantages. Many more rifles were chambered for the .32-40 than carbines, and even these are hard to find. This example still shows some good aged blue in the rear sections of both receiver sides along with good blue on the loading gate and in the more protected areas. The barrel retains blue on the lower portions above the mag tube, around the front  & rear sights and barrel band with much of the remainder of the top portion mixing gray/brown. All fine barrel and tang markings, exc. screws (only one looks a little turned), tight action, strong hammer spring with solid half-cock on the hammer. Original carbine ladder sight with slide intact. Bore is bright. Stock and forend are fine showing normal handling with tight wood to metal fit and no chips or cracks except for the usual hairline age crack coming back from the forend tip bottom and going nowhere. The forend shows a bit more wear, probably from saddle scabbard and over saddle  carry. In all a very rare 117 year old 1894 in a caliber that is seldom encountered.
