Here we present an antique Sharps New Model 1863 Saddle Ring Carbine, made circa 1863-65, then converted to US .50-70 Govt circa 1867 for use in the West by the federal government. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War.
In 1867, the Ordnance Department contracted with the Sharps Rifle Company for conversion of over 31,000 Sharps percussion carbines to the .50-70 breech loading configuration. These carbines were issued to the regular cavalry regiments on the western frontier and remained in service until they were replaced by the Springfield Model 1873 Carbine. The carbine has a blued barrel with casehardened barrel band, receiver, loading lever and butt plate. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The carbine is fitted with the standard folding rear sight and has a sling bar and ring mounted on the left side of the stock and receiver. The right side of the receiver is stamped with the two-line Sharps patent marks and the Lawrence and Sharps patent markings. They went on to experience some of the most exciting times in American history during the Indian Wars, the settling of the Western Frontier, and the connecting of the coasts with the railroad.
The overall condition is good. Excellent action. Good bore with strong rifling. This example sports a solid walnut stock with a clear “DFC” conversion Ordnance cartouche in the middle of the left side of the butt stock. The blade is missing from the front sight.
