OAL 57.5", .69 Caliber. 42" tapered round, sighted, smooth bore barrel is stamped w/ "K/Shield" (under stock) and Regimental marking " I 7 " at muzzle. Rounded convex lock is 6.5" long, has bridled pan, robust swan-neck cock and stamped w/ Henneburg-Suhl "WK" maker's mark between frizzen spring arms. Iron furnture includes one-piece 6.5" convex sideplate, 3 spring-retained barrel bands (mid band w/ sling swivel), 12.5" trigger guard tang w/ integral sling swivel, 3 screw unmarked buttplate w/ 5" top extension and original full length ramrod marked "N/1272". Mounted in a full-length walnut stock, nicely fluted wrist and comb, w/ initials "HFI" carved into right side. The butt end under the plate is marked in heavy charcoal "B/S". CONDITION: Very Fine. Musket shows little evedence of battle or field use. Metal surfaces overall have aged gray patina with light to moderate scattered pitting.Woodis generally sound and has much of what appears to be its period finish with no evidence of sanding. Some minor cracking and losses on left side forestock at middle and front barrel bands. Bore is very good. Sound mechanics. Note: It is mere speculation, but given the period of manufacture and condition of this musket along with its markings, this may be from the German "Hanau FreiKorps Infantry" ( HFI ) ? " Free Corps of Light Infantry (Hesse Hanau). Raised Germany, January 1781, arriving in New York, August 1781. A poorly disciplined corps, the unit did patrol duty around the city, leaving it and returning to Germany, July 1783. Disbanded on return. Strength: one lieutenant colonel, one major, one surgeon, one paymaster and his attendant, one provost and one gunsmith, a rifle company of three officers and 157 men and four light infantry companies of the same makeup. Uniform: Green coats with red collars and cuffs and no lapels, the light company in leather caps while the rest wore cocked hats. Commander: Lieutenant Colonel M. Janecke."
