RARE AND DESIRABLE EARLY MODEL 53 IN .44 WCF (.44-40) CHAMBER, FANCIER THAN STANDARD WALNUT, #6XXX, MADE 1926. Very difficult to find in this caliber as the standard caliber was .25-20 followed by .32-20 and relatively few made in .44-40. This unusual example has some fairly fancy grained walnut in the buttstock- both sides and fancier than standard on the forend. also It is fitted with a patent dated Marble tang sight with a small blade/ivory bead front sight. The rear dovetail has a blank filler and appears to have never had a rear sight installed. About all the deep original barrel blue remains, as it also does on the forend cap. The receiver shows some flaking/mixing brown mainly on the left side and much less on the right side where most of the blue remains. There is blue thinning on the receiver bottom. Fine blue on the bolt and loading gate. Screws look unturned. Wood is excellent with original steel butt plate. Tight wood to metal fit. Tight action, secure safety half-cock and bright excellent sharp bore. These are super hard to locate especially in this fine condition and with fancy walnut. Great limited production 98 year old Winchester! $4250.
