Description: Robbins & Lawrence Windsor Vt. 1856 Civil War Rifle cut to a Carbine, as was issued to the Georgia 8th Regt. ( Rome Light Guards ) Floyd County Georgia. They were part of the Army of Northern Virginai CSA. The rifle/carbine came out of a home in Ackworth Ga. Floyd County GA. in 1998 which was the home of the Rome Light Guards Co A of the 8th Ga. Infantry. The lock has the Crown & Winsor VT 1856 markings. The overall metal condition is not good, was heavly rusted from the attic, the action all works fine, the barrel is rifled and has been cut from a full rifle. The stock has been relieved of a center section for making it lighter or easy to grab from a saddle scabbard ???. There are initals on the side of the stock LMB and a large 8, there is a number 27 on the stock rear and another 8 by the butt tang. The muster roll of Co. A, 8th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry Army of Northern Virginia C.S.A. list a (L. Beal as corporal July 16,1861, page 917 #935, wounded at Wilderness Campaign Va. May 6, 1864. Absent wounded, October 31, 1864. No later record. The stock markings seem to somewhat align with these Muster Roll Records and other markings for a possible identity of a CSA Period soldier coming from Floyd County Georgia where the gun was found. Documents show many Georgis regiments receiving Robbins & Lawrence guns and indicate that the milita company known as Rome Light Guards ( later to be Company A of the Georgia Infantry ) were armed with "Windsor Enfields" of this same kind.
