Description:
For sale is a Colt two-band .58 caliber rifle musket from my personal collection. In appearance it is like a typical three-band Colt Model 1861 Special Musket (1861-1865). The lock plate is marked Colt/address and is dated 1863. However, it has a 32” long barrel and two bands. The barrel does not appear to be cut down, as the diameter at the muzzle and the barrel wall thickness does not match that of a cut-off barrel. Note that the barrel wall is thin at the muzzle, like the standard three-band musket, meaning a 40” standard barrel would have been turned down. The forestock and nose cap do not appear altered. This two-band rifle musket does not conform to reports of an 1864 contract for an “Artillery” model. As far as I am aware, Colt did not make two-band rifle muskets like this, so it could be a post war or captured remake, or an unknown variation of the Colt's 1861 Special model. Captured arms taken to a Confederate arsenal for refurbishing were typically stamped on the bottom of the stock with an ordnance inspection/acceptance letter. This rifle does not show a stamp. The left side lock panel has ordnance inspector/acceptance stamp ‘ACM’ (Alfred C Manning). There is a small, faint stamp showing ‘EMC’ (EM Camp) on the comb near the butt plate. Long-range leafs on the rear sight appear to have been cut off, and thus the sight has only one leaf. This rifle has clearly seen much use, and the stock has a fair number of old dents, gouges, and scratches. The metal was left as found and exhibits light pitting in places. There is cap corrosion around the breech. The eagle head on the breech plug bolster is faint. The tang is stamped with a small “H.” The ramrod appears original to the piece. Overall, this rifle has a deep patina and shows wonderful polish in the right places, such as ahead of the lock where it was carried and held when shooting. It is in the condition I bought it, except for a new nipple. The rifling is fair, the bore is good. Money order, bank check, or personal check. Rifle is held until a personal check clears. Shipping is $40.
