Description:
Winchester Model 1873 rifle in caliber 44 WCF (44-40). Early Third Model, serial number 119735, made in 1883, having a 24" round barrel, full magazine, special order shotgun butt with smooth steel butt plate, plain trigger, plain walnut stocks, blued and case hardened finish. Rifle also sports a gold-washed Beach combination front sight that retains about 15% of the original gold.

Barrel and magazine exhibit 50% coverage of the original finish that has turned a mix of plum and patina. Receiver, butt plate, fore end cap have turned a mottled patina/silver with some staining. Hammer and lever retain traces of original case colors, otherwise in same finish condition as the receiver. Fore end wood has 2 slivers missing along the top line on the left side. Butt stock has a tiny chip missing at the left top by the widow's peak of the butt plate. Otherwise, the stocks are very good with minimal wear, never sanded or refinished, still tight and proud. Assembly number "47" matches on the left side of the lower tang and in the upper channel of the butt stock. Action works as it should, including the half-cock safety. Original dust cover is just slightly loose. Bore has consistent rifling front to rear, no bulges, no rings, no pits, with some frost. Original rear sight and elevator intact. Upper tang plug screws are replacements, most likely due to prior removal of a tang peep sight. Barrel and cartridge lifter are not caliber-marked, common to the early 44s. Mag tube is tight with no play. An honest early Third Model 1873 Winchester in a desirable caliber that grades NRA Antique Very Good that will make a good investment and fill a void in your Winchester collection.
