Here we present an antique “Protection” Marked Percussion Spur Trigger Pocket Revolver, made circa 1857-58. According to Flayderman’s catalog on page 368 of the 9th Edition, the maker of this little self defense pistol is unknown, although some authorities attribute its production to Eli Whitney. These revolvers were made at the time when Colt’s master patents were expiring. Around 1,000 were manufactured in total.
This little self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in a busy city like New York or Philadelphia during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff. As mentioned, this was of course made primarily for self-defense, and very well would tell stories if it could. Much happened in the United States and abroad during this period. With six shots, a short barrel, and a small bore of .28 caliber, this revolver would have been very easy to conceal and would have been quite the shock for the ne’er do wells roaming the big city streets. Though worn on this example, the cylinder featured rolled engraving of a policeman, two burglars, and a traveler with two highwaymen.
Though not primary military arms during the American Civil War, this style of handguns was commonly privately purchased by soldiers for use on the battlefield. Whether legend or fact, it is interesting to note something commonly read about pocket revolvers of the day, that while they could be used for self-defense against the enemy, many soldiers kept them on their person to defend themselves against an unwanted amputation in the primitive field hospitals that were notorious, even in their day.
The overall condition is good. Dark patina throughout. Part of the cylinder scene remains visible and shows a man holding a case or a bag and pointing a handgun, it is marked “PROTECTION” beside him. The action of the hammer and trigger are strong. The cylinder does not lock up. The bore is dim with strong rifling. Grips show use and remain solid.
