Description:
Guns Listing ID: 1295241

This is an Allen Conversion of a Springfield 1864 Musket. The Allen conversion was part of a revolutionary shift in firearms technology that saw a shift to self-contained metal cartridges. the Allen conversion took Springfield 1864 muzzle loading muskets and converted them to a breech loader using a trapdoor mechanism. These conversions were used as a stopgap solution to transfer to breech loading firearms in the American military while new purpose built breech loading firearms were designed and put into production. These Allen Conversion 1864s would quickly be replaced by Springfield‚‚s new model 1873, a firearm designed from the ground up to use the trapdoor loading method.
