Here we have a unique medium frame Colt Lightning pump rifle made for the San Francisco Police Department in .44-40 WCF caliber. The Colt Lightning Carbine or Colt Lightning Rifle was a slide-action (pump-action) rifle manufactured by Colt from 1884 until 1904 and was originally chambered in .44-40 caliber. Colt eventually made the Lightning Rifle in three different frame sizes, to accommodate a wide range of cartridges, from .22 Short caliber and .38-40 to .50-95 Express. Its profile resembles the pump-action rimfire rifles made by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and Remington Arms. The Lightning saw use as a sporting arm in America and was adopted for use by the San Francisco Police Department. This is an excellent example of a rare variation of the Colt Lightning Slide-Action Rifle manufactured for the San Francisco Police Department. A total of only 401 of these medium-frame Lightning Rifles were sold to the S.F.P.D. in 1898. These rifles are in their own serial number range and are marked "S.F.P. (serial number)" on the lower tang. These rifles have a 26-inch round barrel chambered for the .44-40 cartridge, blade front and adjustable buckhorn style rear sights, oil-finished walnut stock, and uncheckered forend. The barrel, receiver, and butt-plate have the Colt high-polish commercial blue finish, and the hammer is casehardened. The Rampant Colt is prominently marked on the left side of the receiver. The caliber "44 Cal." is marked on the top of the barrel at the breech. This particular SFPD Colt Lightning has some high-edge wear and handling marks but nothing more serious than a scrape and some slight finish loss on the left side of the receiver. The wood has a few light dings and marks but nothing severe. The 26" barrel is bright and has strong rifling. This fine Colt Lightning would make a great addition to a collection or a strong start to a new collection.
