RARE Antique ALLEN & WHEELOCK Small Frame BAR HAMMER Perc. Pocket Revolver
Also Known as the “TRANSITION PEPPERBOX-REVOLVER”
Here we present an antique Allen & Wheelock Small Frame Double Action Percussion Pocket Revolver, made circa 1858-61 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Also known as the "Transition Pepperbox-revolver", this model was manufactured circa 1858 into the early 1860s with a total production of only about 1,000. The small frame model is identical in profile to that of the medium and large frame, but with a hammer that is evenly rounded.
The left barrel flat is marked "ALLEN & WHEELOCK. WORCESTER, MA. / ALLEN'S PATENT APRIL 16 1845" and the cylinder is roll engraved with a wooded scene with deer and a marsh scene with ducks. The matching serial (batch) number "46" is marked on the inside of each grip panel, on the lower right rear barrel flat and on the right side of the front strap under the grip. The revolver is manufactured without sights, blue finish with casehardened cylinder and hammer, and fitted with smooth varnished walnut grips.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Solid grips. Markings are legible, but the barrel address is worn. The cylinder scene is intact. Numbers match. Here is a very nice example of an exceedingly scarce Allen & Wheelock Small Frame Percussion Revolver!
