An Early & Historic Civil War U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officers Sword Identified To Capt. Oscar Jewett Of The Nevada 1st Cavalry In Nice Untouched Condition. The sword is a U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officers and is very untouched throughout. It has a nice blade with clear etching on both sides which includes a large spread winged American Eagle and an elongated "US" on the other along with other motifs. The blade has a natural patina throughout it. The original grip is very untouched and is complete throughout. It has its original leather wrap and ire on it. The brass guard and pomel have a natural dark patina on them. The top of the guard has "CAPT. O.M." period scratched into it. The leather scabbard is untouched throughout and has dark untouched brass hardware on it. The drag of the sword is an old replacement. At the top of the leather scabbard ther is an old period G.A.R. museum tag that reads, " PROPERTY AT ONE TIME, OF CAPTAIN O.M. JEWETT, CIVIL WAR".
All three of the Jewett Brothers fought in the civil war. His older brother Wallace was killed at "Little Round Top" at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. The sword Oscar carried here is most likely the same sword his brother carried at Gettysburg. Oscar did not join the 1st Nevada Cavalry until after Wallace was killed. He most likely got his sword back with his belongings  and carried it back into the civil war. The other brother Alonzo enlisted in 1862. He was wounded at Cold Harbor. Oscar fought in the Civil War & Indian Wars from 9/20/63 to 7/21/1866 and mustured out at Fort Churchill, NV. He had a very good civil war record and an even better one afterwards as he was a Captain during the "Powder Springs Expedition" and Fought many times against the "Paiute Indians" in and around Virginia City in all directions. It is documented that he was wounded many times during this period.
This Identified Sword Has Very Fine History That Dates From The Civil War All The Way Until The Later 1860's. It Comes With Over 150 Pages Of Documetation Which Includes Newspaper Articles And Many Hours Of Research. This Sword Would Be A Fantastic Addition To Any Very Fine Collection!
