These unique fowling guns are fitted w/ 27-1/4" chopper lump bbls gold inlaid “John Wilkes” and engraved “79 Beak Street. London. W.1.” on concave game ribs. Acanthus leaf engraving wedges at chamber area and gold numbers “1” and “2” at breech. Bbl flats have 10 Bore London nitro proofs for 3-1/2" cham dated 1984. Lumps marked “Perrett/Circle” . Sidelock ejector actions are case hardened with bushed strikers, gold washed internals, double triggers, automatic safeties (SAFE inlaid in gold) and gold tumbler cocking indicators. Gold numbers also appear on top levers and forend tips. Frames, bottom metal and top strap are engraved in full-coverage, flowing relief vine and acanthus leaves w/ shaded background and acanthus relief carved fences. All appended metal is engraved to match. Lockplates are adorned with exquisitely detailed gold encrusted game scene vignettes as is the bottom of each. Gun #1 features 11 raised gold inlays of Mallard and Geese on the wing in marsh scenes with Maker's name in gold on lockplates and raised gold landing Goose on bottom. Gun #2 features 14 raised gold inlays of flighted Pintails and Geese also with “John Wilkes” in gold on the lockplates and raised gold landing resting Geese on bottom. This highly detailed work is masterfully executed by esteemed English engraver Ken C. Hunt whose signature appears within each vignette. Rolled edge trigger bows have matching engraving and SNs (transposed numerals - see factory letter) in gold on their long tangs. Mounted in highly figured exhibition grade French walnut stocked to the fences and feature straight hand grip, drop points, point pattern checkering w/ mullered borders and vacant gold ovals at toe line terminating in checkered butts. Splinter forends with Anson releases are engraved and checkered to match. Accompanied by a prodigious brass bound oak and Elephant leather covered 2-gun motor case, lined in burgundy cloth, w/ Wilkes' Beak Street gold embossed black leather label in lid. Accouterments include three ivory handled turnscrews, two engraved gold plated oil bottles marked “John Wilkes London”, engraved gold plated striker cans marked “1' and “2 “and gold plated snap caps for each gun. CONDITION: Exceptionally Fine, essentially new and unfired. Guns retain virtually all of their original fine English Best Quality factory finishes with only the lightest of storage/assembly marks. Wood is sound with sharp checkering. Vibrant hardening colour throughout. Engraving is crisp and clean w/ all gold intact. Transposed numbers on trigger tangs can be remedied. Perfect screws. Standing breech and bores are pristine. Barrels ring like church bells, bright bores. Mechanically fine. Case leather has only a few light marks. Interior is excellent, Absent one ivory handled tool. Guns are accompanied by a Wilkes Factory letter compiled by long time Wilkes employee Craig Whitsey explaining the unique special order history of the pair of guns by one of America's passionate collectors as well as the nature of the serial number errors on trigger tangs.
