This was one of the 200 of the .45 caliber pistols originally purchased by the Army in 1907 for trials for selection of a new service sidearms. They were issued to various active units in 1909 for field testing.           This particular pistol was out of the lifelong collection of Harry W. Sanford, one of the greatest gun gurus of the 20th Century, he was known for the design and help of maufacturing Auto Mag Pistols. This pistol was purchased from his son directly after Harry passed and his estate was sold. When the Colt 1911 was finally chosen over the Savage, the guns were bought back by Savage, who refinished them and sold them commercially, mostly to E. K. Tyron Co. of Philadelphia, PA This gun retains about 99-100% of the matte, blue, Savage factory refinish done by the factory. As with all the Savage buy-backs, the company name was removed from the top of the slide, leaving only ".45 CAL." However, the ones not sold to Tyron but rather sold commercially by Savage had "Savage Arms Corp. Utica, NY. U.S.A." Stamped to the left of the slide rib, as does this one. This pistol in particular is virtually new mechanically speaking with a mint bore and checkered wood grips. The serial number of the pistol is 177, the magazine is mismatched with a serial number of 78, as all surviving pistols have mis-matched magazines. We have the J.T. Callahan historical letter as photographed with the gun. The address was taken off due to confidential reasons. Mr. Callahan personally researched this pistol in the ledgers at the Savage Plant. He wrote that this pistol was shipped from Savage's original Utica, New York factory on August 31, 1922 to the E. K. Tyron Co. of Philadelphia, PA. The design of this pistol is attributed to E.H. Searle, who was previously an ordinance officer at Springfield Armory and had been developing the design since 1903.  After initial testing of all entrants, both foreign and domestic, the Savage and Colt designs remained as finalists. Throughout the next several years additional testing and re-designs were submitted and tested both on the range and in the field with the Calvary. The final test occurred in March 1911, with the Colt entry being selected in part on the basis of accuracy, endurance and less recoil. Most of the guns were returned to Savage, who re-condition them and made them available to the commercial market through E.K. Tyron, with one group sold on August 14, 1922, and the rest sold on August 31, 1922. A few were sold individually here and there. This is a near new, original, and documented example of an important, experimental semi-automatic pistol manufactured in very limited numbers to compete in the U.S. Army trials against the Model 1907 Colt that eventually led to the adoption of the Colt M1911 as the Army service pistol. The vintage wood box was shipped with the gun from Harry's son, as it is solid oak with red velvet liner that compliments the bluing of the gun. He said it had been in this box for as long as he could remember the gun. (Coming from Harry's Son himself) "My Dad collected the best of all the automatic pistols in history. He was very proud of this one and claims it is the best condition sample in the world. I don't know how he would know, but it is 99+% and looks unfired since it came from the Savage factory. It is totally original, owned by one of the great gun gurus of the 20th Century. I would be happy to attest to the ownership by my father, upon request."
