This particular M1897 was built by Matsushita Kinzoku KK (Matsushita Metalworking Corp.) under Kokura Army Arsenal supervision and has a 90%+ blued, factory sharpened, perfect tip, 15 9/16" blade with light marks from the scabbard. The tip and edge are unaltered with a strong Stacked Cannon Ball/Kokura/ Arrow M, Matsushita Kinzoku makers mark stamp at the ricasso. The guard has most of the original blue with a straight guard of an early pattern. The wooden, very good condition grips are held by two rivets with a nice deep patina. These grips do wrap around and meet at the bottom like they do on later models. The pommel has most of the blue and is stamped with WD58754. This is paired with an all steel scabbard that has been painted green with loop and cylindrical shaped finial. There is an American style date of "7-22-44" in marker on the scabbard. Also included is an excellent rare rubberized frog which is marked on the back and a bit stiff as is normal, these were only produced for a very limited time early war. SOLD |
