Here we present an antique English J. H. Crane Double Barrel Side x Side Percussion Hammer Shotgun, manufactured circa the 1860s in London, England. London, along with Birmingham was the epicenter for English gunmaking all the way through the turn of the century. This is an English fowling piece that is elegant in its simplicity and practicality. This double barrel hammer gun would have been used primarily for putting game on the table or defending one’s homestead.
This shotgun was manufactured somewhere around the westward expansion in the United States and was likely an export to the U.S. during a time when this type of firearm would have been a staple in the covered wagons heading into the new frontier.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. Original patina. The bores are in good shape for their ages. The wrist is wrapped with a leather cord and contains a stable crack. Legible markings. Lightly engraved locks.
