The caliber is developmentally interesting for even though the pistols are marked “35 S&W” and the completed pistol has a groove diameter of about 0.355, production guns were made to shoot a bullet diameter more closely dimensioned to the .32 ACP (.309 -.312), underscoring S&W’s initial interest in a larger diameter bullet. The first pistol is unfinished, unnumbered, but functionally complete with a horizontally sliding magazine release on the butt. The left side barrel is marked “35 S.&W. AUTO. CTG” stamp while the top bears three line address and patent dates up to Sept. 24, 1912. Fitted with smooth walnut grips with gold S&W medallions and a blued magazine. The second pistol is largely an unfinished and unnumbered frame and barrel assembly with similar but differently located markings and a differently oriented and sliding magazine release. There is also a large collection of small parts that includes an unfinished magazine body and a partially finished magazine body with its floorplate (but no follower or spring); these are both stamped along their spines “SAMPLE 6 21 1912”. Additional parts include a backstrap, triggerguard, trigger, grip safety, pins, springs, screws, etc. The entire lot came from well known and long standing S&W Executive Donald C. Fogg. A fascinating collection of tool room guns and parts that sheds some light on the origins of the 1913 pistol and its cartridge. Condition: VG/EXC as one might expect from tool room/experimental guns and unfinished parts that have been laying in someone’s drawer or collection for over a hundred years! ~~Insured shipping fee of $75; most packages shipped using FedEx 2nd Day.~~ SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Serial Number: NSN Caliber Info: 0.35 |
