NICE British Mid-1800s FOWLING Piece
Here we present an antique Chappell Fowling Piece, made circa the mid-19th Century likely in Birmingham, England. Birmingham was the epicenter for English gunmaking all the way through the turn of the century. This is an English fowling piece that is elegant in its simplicity and practicality. This hammer gun would have been used primarily for putting game on the table or defending one’s homestead.
During this era, there were many English and Belgian gunmakers who were capitalizing on the eager markets in the United States. Its mid-length barrel made for a great gun for the field. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s.
The overall condition is very good. Gray patina throughout with Damascus pattern on the barrel. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and in very good condition. The stock is solid with sharp checkering; there are slender grafts on either side of the barrel in the fore end.
