Two of Samuel Colt’s prime promotional techniques exploited by him on a grand scale in Europe as in America were: 1) displays at fairs and expositions and 2) special presentations to monarchy, military brass, and selected politicians. (RLW).
Markings and Technical Features of No. 107
The steel parts were finished in what appears to have been a combination of blue, case-hardening, and silver plating. The grips are of ivory, an unusually early example of this model of Colt Revolver with handles of that desirable material. The frame is the civilian variation, with no aperture for a shoulder stock attachment. On the top of barrel is the extremely rare hand-engraved marking in old English lettering:

This marking is so seldom observed that a special section in The Colt Engraving Book deals with the many ramifications of it’s presence on a Colt Revolver. Please note that serial No. 104 has the same exact style barrel address.
The serial number 107 appears on the bottom of the barrel lug, the bottom of the frame, the forward portion of triggerguard strap, and buttstrap. The number 107 is found on the bottom of wedge, and the cylinder has a non-matching number 2399. The loading lever is also marked 107.
Among other features which are important and unusual on No. 107 are the inspector marks as follows:
T on left side of barrel flat in front of cylinder
T on the top of the breech of the barrel.
T on top of backstrap
T below the serial number on triggerguard
JT under serial number on the butt
T on the bottom of the ivory grips
The grips on No. 104 Colt Model 1860 Army are extremely rare - seldom observed on early serial number examples of this model. One piece ivory grips are so seldom observed that one would suggest that the total number of percussion Colt stocks of this material was of an extremely low percentage from the total manufactured.
Accompanying this extremely rare 1860 Colt Army is a beautiful hand stitched leather holster and two interesting copies of letters between a previous owner and Gerald Keogh who was the author of article written in the February 1959 issue of The Gun Report. The letters are dated March 1959.
Most collectors will agree that early 1860 Colt Fluted Armies had a good chance of going South prior to the Civil War. Could serial number 107 be one of the 1860 Colts sold to the South?
