Payment Types Accepted: Cash, money order, certified check Description: This fine example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1861 rifle-musket is in a high state of condition when compared with the strong majority of examples seen today. The 1861 Springfield played a crucial role as the most widely used infantry weapon by Union forces during the American Civil War, and most saw very hard use including captured examples on the Confederate side, making genuine fine examples, such as this one, considered hard to find today for the collector. This muzzleloading percussion military rifle features a 40 inch barrel for use with .58 caliber Minié ball. The barrel is fitted with a blue finished three-leaf rear sight and front sight that doubles as a socket bayonet lug. The lock plate is marked with the iconic “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” along with the American eagle motif and “1862” manufacturing date. The top of the barrel also bears the “1862” date along with the standard “V/P" proof stamps above the eagle head. The left stock flat is stamped with two clearly visible government inspection cartouches including “ESA” (Erskine S. Allin) in an oval and “HSH” (Henry S. Hill) in a box with rounded sides. "US" stamped on top of the buttplate. This Springfield 1861 shows attractive bright original armory polished iron surfaces, untampered with in the modern day and retaining its original distinctive sharp edges and markings. The only minor flaws being some dark pin-prick pitting visible on top of the middle area of the barrel and buttplate, some darkened surface spots visible on the lock, a small chip to the left of the lower trigger tang, and some brown appearance on the otherwise high condition rear sight and ramrod, likely from storage and showing consistent with the patina of the gun. The walnut stock shows defined edges overall and retains its original oil finish, with some light storage related marks, and sharp clear cartouche stamps. The percussion nipple shows minimal firing evidence along with the excellent bore showing very sharp rifling, nearly as new. Somehow, this example appears to have seen very little use. The action operates smoothly, with the hammer locking securely at both half-cock and full-cock positions with crisp clicks. The included period original brown leather sling, socket bayonet and leather scabbard are all matching the condition of the gun, as they likely remained in storage with it throughout the years. As a required shoulder arm in any Civil War collection, this fine example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1861 rifle-musket would be a prime addition and would proudly fill the hole! As an antique, this can ship directly to your door!
