Description:
Whitney Kennedy Special Order Medium Frame Rifle 44-40. Early S type lever and special ordered with 28" barrel. Serial number D615 matching on lower tang and lever. Nice bore, I will rate it a 7.5 on a scale from 1 to 10. Rarer barrel marking with Kennedy being stamped later on (see pic). This is what Flaydermans says in its description of the barrel marking: "Occasionally just the single word Kennedy appears after the Whitney name, divorced from the rest of the markings; with few specimens known marked only KENNEDY." Lower tang is missing two tension screws (see pic). Barrel and magazine retain 60 to 65% original blue with some warm smooth brown patina mixing in. Original sights. Receiver retains 50% original blue with the remainder a gray / brown patina. Actions functions nicely and locks up tight. Both forend and buttstock are in good condition. A tiny chip in upper right hand tang area (where it meets the receiver, see pic). There is still a fair amount of original varnish remaining. Both pieces do show the normal handling marks that you would expect to see from a rifle of this vintage. This is just a cool rifle and in a great caliber. A lot of history, Whitney Rifles were such a superior firearm, and the threat was so great to Winchester, that Winchester bought out the company in 1888. This is a rare manufacturer with some condition so don't miss your chance to own a piece of history. Antique and can shipped directly to your doorsteps. Please feel free to ask questions.
