Description:
WINCHESTER 1886 45-70 22" BARREL CIRCA 1888. THE RECEIVER WAS MANUFACTURED IN 1888. IT ORIGINALLY LEFT THE FACTORY AS 38-56 ON APRIL 2RD, 1888, AS A 38-56 CALIBER WITH A 28" BARREL. AT SOME POINT THROUGHOUT ITS LIFE, THE BARREL HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH A 45-70 22" BARREL BUT WE ARE UNSURE AS TO WHEN THIS TOOK PLACE OR WHO DID THE WORK. THE FIREARM DOES HAVE A LETTER FROM THE CODY MUSEUM STATING THIS FACT. THE GUN LEFT THE FACTORY ON APRIL 3RD, 1888, ON ORDER NUMBER 6050. THE GUN FEATURES AS SET TRIGGER, SPROTING SAFETY, CHECKERED PISTOL GRIP STOCK WITH HIGH GRADE BLACK AMERICAN WALNUT STOCK. THE GUN HAS SLING SWIVELS AND A 3 PIECE ROD IN THE TRAP DOOR BUTT PLATE. ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE THE TANG ON THE LEFT, IT IS MARKED "1678XXXSS." THE "SS" LIKELY MEANS SLING SWIVELS OR STOCK STORAGE. The "1678" MARKING IS ALSO PRESENT UNDER THE BUTT PLATE IN THE STOCK INLET AND ON THE BUTT PLATE ITSELF. THE OVERALL CONDITION OF THE GUN IS FINE WITH MOST OF THE BLUE BEING REFINISHED. THE STOCK HAS SOME SLIGHT HANDLING MARKS SCATTERED, THE CHECKERING APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN RECUT. MECHANICALLY EXCELLENT CONDITION.
